The Vessel
Godzilla
Godzilla is a Polynesian-style sailing catamaran designed by James Wharram. Wharram studied the ancient Polynesian sailing canoes and based his designs on their timeless principles. In the 1950s, he was the first person (together with two companions) to sail a catamaran west to east across the North Atlantic. Godzilla’s unique pedigree and aesthetics create an environment conducive to artistic thinking and research, in contrast to a conventional scientific research ship or a traditional artistic residency on land. Its shallow draft, stable platform, and wind power allow artists and researchers close physical and mental access to the sea and its coastline. The simple no-fuss interior and blend of Western and Polynesian aesthetics provide an environment well-suited to creative artistic thinking.
