Passepartout Duo (IT/US)

Passepartout Duo is formed by pianist Nicoletta Favari and percussionist Chris Salvito. They have been traveling together for eight years, while developing performances with sound and creating new musical instruments that have become a sort of ever-evolving organic extension of themselves. They are interested in how sound allows us to connect dots in new ways in our reality and within ourselves.

The Passepartout Duo sailed with Godzilla across the Baltic from Hanko, Finland to Nynäshamn, Sweden. While on board at sea and in Hanko harbor, the Duo recorded soundscapes of the water on their DIY hydrophones and antenna for electromagnetic sounds. In Hanko the duo tested their pirate radio station, which is an on going project, they have tried out in two marine locations before. The idea is to broadcast non-verbal content, including the electromagnetic features of the waterscape and its possible communication with their own DIY instruments, with a broadcaster that has the range of some hundred meters. In the Hanko harbor the Duo also made a short internet broadcast of the sounds they recorded there.

“We have crossed the Baltic Sea on ferries a few times, and have met this sea in some many different countries that sometimes it is hard to mentally grasp the fact that it is the same waters.”
