Katya Balaban (LV)

Katja Balaban is a documentary photographer. In her photo projects, she often explores how social and political processes become embedded in the natural landscape. For over a year, she’s been working on a photographic project about the Baltic Sea coast. Katya is gathering materials on how human intervention and climate change are triggering coastal erosion and driving the shoreline further inland.

On board Godzilla Katya will take part in the expedition from Liepāja to Ruhnu Island. She hopes this will give her a new perspective of the shoreline, one from the sea, and an opportunity to document the changing coastline. More broadly, Katya hopes the experience will inspire her!

“I have lived near the Baltic Sea for the past three years, following a period of forced emigration. Emotionally, the sea has carried me through this time — perhaps even saved me. Walking along its narrow coastline, I met people, listened to their stories, and gradually began to connect with this new place.”
