Marek Tuszynski is a Berlin-based researcher, creative director and artist-curator who explores how digital technologies shape our perception, politics and imagination. With over 30 years’ experience at the intersection of technology, activism and storytelling, he probes the power infrastructures embedded in tech systems, crafting provocative, participatory experiences that invite critical reflection on our digital entanglements with the planet.
Recent projects such as The GAFAM Empire (with DensityDesign Lab) and Technologies of Hope and Fear (winner of a Prix Ars Electronica Honourable Mention) examine how dominant platforms increase their influence through data, design, and acquisition. He connects speculative design, data storytelling, and open research to create accessible interventions.
He is also the driving force behind Exposing the Invisible, a global network and toolkit for digital and open-source investigation used by over 100,000 researchers each year. His work has helped shape the field of digital investigation, influencing efforts such as Bellingcat and award-winning journalistic investigations.
In 2023, he was named a Mozilla Rise25 Awardee and recognised as a visionary artist shaping a fairer and more inclusive internet future.
As a lifelong sailor, his connection to water informs his creative thinking around oceanic futures and place-based, hybrid storytelling.
On board Godzilla, Marek will be organising his work on mapping those who are mapping the seas, their surface, climate, waters, biodiversity, the seabed and what lies beneath. He will be creating a system map of the power dynamics surrounding ocean resources.
“I grew up with the Baltic Sea, although I was not raised on the coast. I grew up closer to the mountains. In my early childhood, I would spend my summers at the Baltic Sea. It was the first place where I experienced the vastness of the ocean. This is where I learnt to swim and where I developed my passion for sailing. It is a very personal connection.”
