We invite applications for “Imagining Godzilla”- short-term, residential projects to be carried out on the sailing catamaran Godzilla in the Gulf of Botnia, northern Baltic Se,a during summer 2026. Since 2019 we have hosted over 70 artists on board, with projects varying from short film shootings to underwater performances and surveying blue algae blooms out at sea. You can read about different projects from various artists here: https://imagininggodzilla.fi/artists/
If you have a project centered around the Baltic Sea’s nature and ecology or the developing geopolitical situation, or you think your artistic work would benefit from a period onboard Godzilla, we encourage you to apply. There are no restrictions on the type of artistic or scientific projects that can be proposed, you can share your wildest dreams with us!
Summer 2026 we will be exploring the Gulf of Botnia, the northernmost arm of the Baltic Sea that separates Finland and Sweden. The trip is divided into legs, and each leg can accommodate between one or two artist/researchers in addition to the crew. Please select three legs in order of preference. See the route map here: https://imagininggodzilla.fi/summer-2026/ We offer Godzilla as a mobile platform for undertaking artistic and other forms of research that are appropriate for a sailing vessel. The shallow draft (less than 1m) allows the boat to get close inshore.
Under sail, the boat cruises comfortably at between 6 to 8 knots. The twin-hulled catamaran form provides a wide and stable platform underway, at anchor, or in harbour for various types of activity.
Practicalities
Each participant will join us for between 2 – 4 days, depending on the leg they choose. Participants are expected to join in as part of the crew, taking turns with cooking, cleaning, etc. All onboard living expenses are shared between participating artists and the crew. Participants fund their own travel expenses to and from the boat, as well as any on-shore activities. Participants must take their own travel, health and equipment insurance. We hope that everyone can enter into the spirit of communal living and learning, being generous to each other, sharing space, time, and resources. If you are keen and/or experienced, you can join in sailing the boat. We also document our activities and promote the project via social media and other channels. We hope you will also contribute writings, sketches, photographs, etc, to record your time on the boat. These are used for promotion of the project only. Copyright of all material stays with the creator.
