Pekka Niskanen

Pekka Niskanen is a media artist, video and filmmaker. His artistic practice consists of films, video installations, experimental theatre and community art projects. His practice and research are both informed by performativity and perspectivism and his methodology is based on a philosophy that sees things and beings as cultural constructions shaped by power.
Niskanen joined Godzilla once again for a few days in Gdansk, where he was filming the third chapter for the PhosFATE Godzilla video that is part of his artistic research. It concentrates on the impact of phosphate rock mining in the Baltic Sea and on Sahrawi people, who had to escape from Western Sahara because of a phosphate rock mine. Until 2023 the project was made in collaboration with a Sahrawi artist Mohamed Sleiman Labat. The focus is on bringing people together to connect and learn about the story of phosphate and it’s significance in both Europe and Northern Africa.
